Five hurt in head-on collision

OXFORD – Five people landed in the hospital after two SUV’s hit head-on Saturday. New York State Troopers, along with the Oxford and Norwich Fire Departments, responded to the collision that happened about a quarter mile south of the Half Way Bridge on Rt. 12 Saturday morning.
Five people were taken to the hospital after the two SUV’s crashed, for “what appeared to be non-serious injuries,” said police. The accident happened just before 9 a.m. during some light snow flurries. Police said the weather conditions and unsafe speeds certainly played a role.
Mariek K. Baptiste, 45, Jersey City, N.J., was traveling south on Rt. 12 when she apparently lost control of her vehicle and crossed the yellow divide into oncoming traffic, striking the second SUV, causing it to roll onto its roof, said eye witnesses at the scene. Police said tickets would be issued.
The identities of the other individuals were not released. Baptiste’s vehicle had two passengers while the second SUV had two people in it; all were taken by ambulance to Chenango Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
