NORWICH –Maine-Endwell scored the final 14 points of the game and outscored the Purple Tornado 20-3 in the final stanza to sweep by the host club in Friday’s matchup.
Reserve Amanda Zdimal scored all 11 of her points in the final quarter – mainly on outside shots – to lead the comeback for the Spartans.
Norwich stiffened on defense over the middle two quarters allowing just 11 points and grabbing a 28-23 edge after three quarters on the strength of 18 points from senior Kyra Collier. Collier finished with a career-high 20 in the loss, but no other NHS player had more than six.
“It was just a one-point game with about 2 1/2 minutes left,” said Norwich coach Bob Branham. “I think it comes down to confidence for us in pressure situations in a close game. We executed well most of the fourth quarter, but we didn’t hit our shots.”
Norwich plays Binghamton Jan. 29.

AFTON – Oxford put up 43 points in the first half to establish a commanding advantage in Friday’s win at Afton.
Christi Baker scored 20 points to lead the Blackhawks (8-4) including 10 in the fourth quarter. Erin Law added 13 and Hollyann Branham netted nine. “They moved the ball well and shot it well,” said Afton coach John Simonds of Oxford. “When I scouted them earlier this year, they weren’t hitting those shots.”
Melissa Oswald paced the Crimson Knights with 15 points and Stephanie Parsons added 10.

GREENE – The Trojans withstood the hot shooting of Sierra Houck and the Warriors in the first half to pull away for the win on Saturday.
Houck had three treys in the opening half, and Sidney made five from behind the arc to stay within 25-21 at the break.
Greene senior Jessica Smith scored 12 in the second half and finished with 14 for the game. Liz Wentlent added 11, and Lizzy Buhl scored nine points and grabbed eight boards. Monica Puglisi had a team-best three steals.
“We started with a zone and pressed, but we switched to man-to-man defense in the second quarter, and that allowed us to get the lead,” said Greene coach Bill Case.

WALTON – B-G senior Jennifer Patten recorded a triple-double and was three steals from a quadruple-double in leading the Bobcats to a win over Walton Saturday.
Patten finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, and seven steals, and it was her third straight 20-plus-point game.
Already leading the host Warriors by 12 at halftime, the Bobcats put the game on ice with a 22-10 third quarter to win Saturday afternoon. Patten scored 13 of her points in that stanza. “We came out and shot it well in the third quarter and were able to shut the door on them,” said B-G coach Bob Conway.
Mariah Schaeffer added 16 points and Marcie Day 10 for B-G (11-2).

EDMESTON – G-MU sophomore Dani Conway is making teams pay at the foul line. Conway was 12-of-14 in Friday’s win over Edmeston, and is 22-for-25 over the last two contests.
Terra Moore added nine points for G-MU (12-3) and a team-high four steals. “The kids were good at gettng the ball to (Dani), and she was good about kicking it back out when they were open,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “Terra was all over the place, and she was able to hit a couple shots from the elbow tonight.”

DELHI – Delhi made 9-of-15 foul shots in the fourth quarter and ended a winless streak in the Midstate Athletic Conference Friday against Unadilla Valley.
UV (5-9) led by four entering the fourth quarter, but was unable to hold the lead to fall for the sixth straight time. “They played some good defense and we had some turnovers that swung the momentum,” said UV coach Daryl Decker of the last stanza.
Theresa Lazarus led UV with 15 points and Cierra Izard netted 10. UV hosts Greene Thursday.

Norwich 55, Maine-Endwell 42
ENDWELL – After three straight losses when it failed to make big plays in the fourth quarter to win, Norwich pulled away in the last quarter to win for the ninth time this season a complete a season sweep of the Spartans.
Robert Martin was the lone Tornado player in double figures finishing with 24, two shy of his career high. “Robert had a great all-around game, and he was steady for us on both ends of the floor,” said Norwich coach Mark Abbott.
Maine-Endwell started quickly and led 15-10 at the first turn. Norwich regrouped in the second stanza to take a four-point lead into halftime, and clamped down on defense in the second half allowing just 15 points. “They were hot in the first quarter and made five outside jump shots,” Abbott said. “We lived with that and figured eventually they would start missing, and they did. We did a nice job on the boards, and at the end we took care of the basketball and closed out the game.”
Amos Parry added nine points and 15 rebounds for Norwich (9-6), who are off until a Jan. 30 home game with Oneonta.
Notes: Norwich held M-E to 28.5 percent shooting (16-of-56) in the game, and outrebounded the Spartans, 41-32 led by Parry, who also blocked four shots. Martin added seven rebounds, five steals, and five assists to fill up the stat sheet. In the junior varsity contest, Norwich rallied from 25 points down in the first half to win in overtime, 79-77.

EDMESTON – G-MU struggled from the field hitting just 5-of-24 from the field in the second half, and Colin Bliss’ 20 points led Edmeston, who knocked G-MU out of first place in Tri-Valley League division play.
Bliss scored six in the fourth quarter, and the Panthers were 7-of-8 from the stripe in the last quarter in which they outscored G-MU 17-3 – the margin of victory. “I can’t be disappointed by our effort, and we actually executed better in this game than we did in the win earlier in the week,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman. “But when you shoot the percentage we did, you simply aren’t going to beat anybody.”
Drew Hartman’s nine points led G-MU (8-5, 5-2).

SIDNEY – Darrin Martindale scored 17 points in the second half – 10 in the fourth quarter – and finished with 29 to lead Sidney past Greene Friday.
The Warriors, clinging to a 44-41 lead early in the last period, used an 8-0 run to create some breathing room. “I thought we did a good job on Martindale in the first half, but he hits the boards hard and he killed us in the second half,” said Greene coach Jeff Paske.
The Trojans connected on four three balls in the first half and led 28-24 at halftme. Cameron Daniels had a game-high 16 points for the Trojans (7-6). “We shot it well from the outside in the first half, but we didn’t work it inside enough,” Paske said. “In the end that hurt us since we only went to the line seven times.”

OXFORD – Oxford has gone from rags to riches in less than three weeks winning its fifth straight game, and at 5-0 in division play are in command of MAC’s division two.
All 11 suited Blackhawks scored led by Ben Burdick’s 12 points and Scott Seiler along with Steve Locke netted 11 apiece. More impressive was the Oxford defense that held Afton junior Bryant Winans to 12 points – 10 below his season average. Winans was Section IV’s top boys scorer coming into the contest at 21.8 points per game.
“Trevor Nelson did a great job defending Winans, and we also did a good job with help defense,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis.
Locke hit back-to-back threes to start the second half putting Oxford’s 10-point margin to 16 points in less than a minute.

DELHI – Unadilla Valley retained sole possession of second place in MAC’s division one – one game behind Sidney – with a comfortable win at Delhi Friday.
Juston Parks hit two three balls in the third quarter and scored 10 of his 14 points in a 21-6 stanza that allowed the Storm to opn a 25-point lead. Raffi Perry led UV with 15 points, his season high and just his second double figures game over the last eight.
“We played really tough defense – especially in the third quarter – to put the game away,” said UV coach Matt Osborne. “Delhi has some good athletes, and I was a little worried how we’d match up athletically. We put some pressure on their guards, and we forced a lot of turnovers.”
