Woman accused of stabbing husband avoids jury trial
NORWICH – A woman accused of trying to kill her husband with a kitchen knife avoided an attempted murder trial Monday by pleading guilty to a lesser charge. Before jury selection could begin in Chenango County court yesterday, Barbara Revette appeared in court to plead guilty to 2nd degree assault and injury to a person with a deadly weapon.
In October 2005, Revette and her husband, Andrew, engaged in a heated domestic dispute in the Town of Otselic that erupted into violence when she allegedly grabbed a 14-inch kitchen knife and stabbed her husband in the stomach.
Revette called 911 while her husband wandered across the street to a neighbor’s for help. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where he underwent surgery for internal injuries and was hospitalized for 14 days.
The case was heading to jury trial Monday, but in the afternoon before jury selection, Revette opted to change her plea. The top original charge was attempted murder; however it was reduced in exchange for a guilty plea to the lesser charge.
“I felt this plea was in the best interest of justice. It punishes her for her conduct, but it also took into account the legitimate factors of the case,” said District Attorney Joseph McBride. The couple had no prior record of domestic violence, according to McBride. The couple also has two children who have been staying with relatives.
The court scheduled sentencing for another date, but ordered restitution be paid and reinstated an order of protection. Revette will face between one to two years possibly in state prison. The District Attorney also requested a mental health evaluation, which the court approved.
