Norwich swimmers send Coach Marchant to final home win

Norwich 93, S-E 69
NORWICH – Norwich head coach, Rick Marchant, who has piloted either the boys’ or girls’ teams since 1976 – sometimes both the same season – went out a winner in his final home meet.
Norwich captured all but two events for its second win over Sherburne-Earlville this season. “They are inexperienced (S-E), but they have a great group and will get better,” said Marchant.
Norwich won six of the first seven events getting two wins from Ryan Marchant, while Evan Wendt posted a 234.70 to win in diving. Cole Adams’ 51.68 easily won the 100 freestyle. Travis Thompson (500 free) and Christof Knappe (100 breaststroke) won for the first time this season for Norwich, and Dan Wenzel took the 100 backstroke. “This was our last home meet, and it was a chance to say goodbye to the seniors who started with me in seventh grade,” Marchant said.
Adams, Mike Delmonico, Ethan Hitchcock, Knapp, Ryan Marchant, Jared Nichols, Mark Ros, Kane Streichert, Thompson, and Wendt were seniors recognized prior to the meet along with team manager, Kerzia Hopson.
Wendt, incidentally, became the third Norwich diver in 15 years to qualify for the state swimming and diving meet last weekend at the Vestal Invitational. Wendt made the cut-off score for 11 dives totaling a 401.80.

Greene 106, Oneonta 79
ONEONTA – Greene rebounded from a 12-point deficit early on to win for the 12th time in 13 meets in a non-league win at Oneonta Tuesday.
Chris Osterwald continued his record-breaking season for Greene putting his time on the board with its first win of the day in the 50 freestyle. Osterwald came back in the diving competition to win in a record-breaking 267.90, one of the highest six-dive scores in Chenango County history.
“We were down 12 points after three evens, but I had complete confidence we would dig deep and come up with some great swims,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “That’s exactly what the kids did.”
Peter McCauley (100 free) and Zach Hennessey (100 breaststroke) provided key wins in the second half of the meet, and the Trojans captured the final two relays to win going away.
The Trojans compete in the Section IV Class C sectionals Feb. 14 at Watkins Glen.

Wrestling

Adirondack 52, S-E 12
SHERBURNE – Adirondack spoiled S-E’s bid at a share of the Center State Conference division title saddling the Marauders with their second league loss of the season and its most lopsided of three defeats overall.
The visitors started with three straight pins to gain the early edge, and had seven pins overall. “We just gave up too many six-pointers,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks. “We just weren’t ready to wrestle, and they wrestled well.”
John Posson (189) won by pin for S-E, while Zach Thomas (171) and Wheeler Brunschmid snagged the host club’s other two wins.
S-E is at Little Falls Thursday.

EARLVILLE – Sherburne-Earlville’s girls rolled one of their best team scores of the season getting big days from Korilynn Perry, Kim Johnson, and Morgan Reid.
All three aforementioned bowlers surpassed the 500 mark as the Marauders remained unbeaten on the season.

OWEGO – Norwich was eliminated from STAC division title contention losing at Owego Tuesday.
Tied entering the last game, the Indians won the third game by 30 pins as the Tornado compiled a 2,884 team score, far below their season average.
Chris Ewen’s 644 series led Norwich.

Volleyball

Hancock 3, B-G 1
HANCOCK – Hancock regrouped from a first-game loss to defeat B-G and hand the Bobcats just their third league loss of the season Tuesday, 20-25, 25-9, 25-18, 25-21.
Megan Appley keyed a dominant second game for Hancock serving the first four and last four points to knot the match. Appley added the final four service points in the decisive fourth game and finished with a team-high nine aces. “We served the ball really well, and it wasn’t dominated by one player,” said Hancock coach Gloria White.
Sam Darling had five aces for B-G (8-5) and Allison Roosa picked up 10 kills.
