More than 35 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine’s Day, but how many of them will be received by men? When it comes to Valentine’s Day gift giving, are buying habits purely one-sided?

Studies show while 36 percent or more women receive gifts of love on this day, only 6 percent of men receive tokens of appreciation. Some gift buyers and receivers simply say it is just tradition that men give, but not receive. Others say good gift-buying etiquette entails giving and receiving equally and yet there are still many people out there who simply bypass the holiday all together.

In a local poll of 10 common shoppers, six reportedly say when it comes to Valentine’s presents they and their significant other reciprocate the gift giving.

“For every dollar he spends on jewelry, I spend the same amount on tools,” said Tina Bargher.

Richard Tolland agrees with mutual gift exchange, saying it’s just like Christmas; you just have to get a little more creative.

Three other shoppers said they do not buy gifts at all for a variety of reasons. Myrna and Frank Wessels say that after 46 years of marriage, they just simply don’t need to celebrate the holiday anymore. Another unidentified shopper says she and her husband have chosen not to celebrate because they have a big family to support they would rather spend the money on other things, instead of Valentine’s gifts.
