Town: Alteren still moving ahead

NORWICH – New investors have signed on and an additional 350 acres of land have been purchased for Stephen E. Stark’s proposed $62 million, 2,000-acre Alteren Resort & Event Center, according to a town official.
The long-anticipated project that could potentially redesign the physical and economic landscape of the county is said to be moving ahead after all, according to Town of Norwich Supervisor David C. Law.
In a meeting Feb. 1 with new Alteren investors, Law said that the project is still running smoothly with new investors on board and an additional 350 acres that have been purchased recently. Not wanting to reveal what lies ahead, investors simply said they wanted to get the land bought and secured before plans are announced, Law said.
Stark’s plans, announced back in 2003, would see the resort complex overlook Norwich from the hillside along a one-mile stretch of county Route 32.
Law says the investors are excited about being part of the project and think Norwich has a good future and fits into the scope of their plans.
Original ideas for the property included 120-room five-story hotel, golf courses, luxury homes and villas, equestrian facilities, ponds and hiking trails.
Investors are now saying that they have gone back to the drawing board but are not yet ready to reveal what they have in store for the project, Law said.
“They want to come back with a new, more aggressive approach,” he said.
