New Oxford venue to be called ‘Six on the Square’

OXFORD – Ever since the departure of the Night Eagle Cafe, a vacancy has been left in the Village of Oxford. Although the entertainment venue does not yet have a new proprietor, it does have a name: ‘Six on the Square.’
Local residents have taken it upon themselves to orchestrate a community effort in developing a new venue in the former Night Eagle location at 6 Lafayette Park downtown. The group is headed by the owners of the site, David and Mary El Emerson, who have already been approached about renting the space. During the last meeting, the group elected a steering committee for the project. Steering committee member Nancy Morey said, “Currently we are evaluating the legal structure of the organization.” The new venue will most likely be a non-profit cultural organization with close ties to the Chenango County Council of the Arts, said steering committee member Jeanie Petersen.
Many expressed a heavy desire to continue the creative arts atmosphere, including things like poetry slams, open mic nights and the off-beat artistic feel of the Night Eagle, which relocated to Binghamton in January. Many in the audience agreed that a venue should emphasize live music. Morey said the group is working with other county entertainment venues such as the Earlville Opera House and the Coffee Connection in Norwich.
“We want to encourage people to come and offer ideas or if you have an interest in helping, please let us know. We’ve already received amazing support from the community and in the end will be a community-styled project,” said Morey.
The group is currently designing a website and will have its next committee meeting later in the month.
