Improvements in store for city's website

NORWICH – According to Mayor Joseph Maiurano, plans are currently in the works to update the City of Norwich website. Redesigning the site has been on the agenda for some time, but had been overlooked due to other pressing matters. Maiurano hopes the new website will make city government more accessible to the public.
“Updating the website has been an important task, but not an urgent one, from a time management perspective,” said City Finance Director William Roberts, explaining why the project had not been undertaken before now. The current City of Norwich website has remained relatively unchanged since 2001.
“I want to really push to get this started in the next 30 days,” said Maiurano. The mayor hopes the updates to the website will make it more accessible to the public. He uses the City of Oneonta’s website as an example of what he would like to see.
The redesigned site will contain information on the various committees and meetings that exist within the city. A schedule of the meetings, meeting minutes and possibly agendas, listing what will be discussed at each meeting, will be available on the site. Currently meeting agendas are not available to the public until they arrive at the meeting. Roberts explained that this was for logistical reasons. Things are often added or subtracted from the agenda often just hours before the meetings. “It’s not a secret. Things change and if the agendas are distributed too early it can be confusing and awkward,” Roberts said.
Maiurano hopes the website will ease the confusion people could experience when jumping into city government. “It’s complicated to go to the council meeting itself,” said Maiurano, “because it’s a condensed form of all of the meetings. To be informed you need to go to all of them,” he said. Maiurano hopes the website will lessen the complication. Residents can read over minutes from some of the other meetings to understand what is going on and what is being worked on. The redesign of the city’s website is expected to begin before the end of March. You can check for updates to the city’s website at www.norwichnewyork.net.
