Otselic Valley gears up for winter festival

SOUTH OTSELIC – Students, teachers and community members will be coming out this weekend for Otselic Valley’s annual Winter Fest Celebration. Starting at 6 p.m. on Friday in the Otselic Valley High School, the Winter Festival will include activities the whole family can enjoy.
“This event is being sponsored by the OVCS Shared Decision Making Team, in an ongoing effort to bring the community into the school and the school into the community,” said elementary Reading First coordinator Susan Phillips.
The event will kick off with an ice cream social, to be held at 6 p.m. Then the real fun begins, as Otselic Valley students and community members show off their talents. The school will host a talent and variety show beginning at 7 p.m., with performances by the young and the young at heart. “We do have (high school science teacher) Sherry Grello’s band, An Audience of One, performing, and in the past, we have had a father-daughter act, an Irish Tenor and a few teachers performing,” said Phillips. New this year will be a performance by a dance troupe made up of fifth and sixth grade students, led by Stephanie Heald, the elementary school’s reading-first building coach. Throughout the year, elementary students have the opportunity to participate in Open Mic, performing musical numbers and dancing for the school during their morning program. “Having the variety show provides an opportunity for students and adults alike to showcase their talents to a wider audience,” Phillips said.
On Saturday the activities continue. Lori Marquard has organized a craft fair, to be held in the multi-purpose room from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A chili cook-off organized by Mary Comfort will be taking place until noon. Antique goods can be brought in for appraisal between 10 a.m. and noon. The cost for appraisals will be $3 per antique, or $5 for three antiques.
High school English teacher Michael Foor-Pessin will host a presentation on the life of Grace Brown, a local woman whose 1906 murder has become infamous. The presentation will begin at 12:45 p.m. Magicians will perform at 10:30 and 12:30, a family movie will be shown at 1:30, and bake sales, games and concessions will be available throughout the day.
