Marcellus 72, Sherburne-Earlville 34
SYRACUSE – Sherburne-Earlville’s unbeaten dream season, one in which it strung together 21 straight wins, came to a sudden end against high-powered Marcellus Saturday evening at Manley Field House.
The Mustangs scored 46 points in the second half; more than S-E’s season-long game allowance, and turned a 15-point third-quarter lead into a blowout outscoring the Marauders 27-4 in the final period.
“Wilson (Rose) was on the bench with four fouls at the end of the third quarter, and I put him back in to start the fourth because I thought it gave us the best chance to come back,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard. “He fouled out in the first minute of the fourth quarter.”
The Marauders were within six points early in the third quarter before back-to-back three balls by the Mustangs moved the lead into double digits for keeps. It was Marcellus’ 14th win in 15 games as they move on in the Section III Class B tournament.
“They were bigger than us at every position, and pretty much quicker than us at every position,” Vibbard said. “I wouldn’t say they are 38 points better than us, but they are definitely the best team we’ve seen all season. They are an extremely good basketball team.”
Vibbard praised his team’s senior leadership in a season where the Marauders produced their best seasonal mark in school history. “Our seniors have been great assets to our basketball program, and they deserve everything they got,” Vibbard said. “They’ve been great for the community and the community has been great for us. When you go up to Syracuse, and two-thirds of the crowd is wearing maroon, that is something to be proud of.”
Rose led S-E with 14 points and Jon Pinney added 10.

Sidney 49, Oxford 42
SIDNEY – Oxford went ice-cold the final 4 1/2 minutes as Sidney finished the game on a 14-0 run to escape with a win Saturday evening.
Darin Martindale scored 10 points in the last quarter, and Kody Westcott came off the bench to bury a three ball to unlock a 42-42 game. Martindale hit 4-of-4 from the line down the stretch to seal the game.
“We were doing more than just hanging in there,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis. “We played great defense and we were patient in our half court offense. We just stopped making shots, and we missed our free throws (0-for-4) in the fourth quarter. If we could have made something, it would have been fine.”
Oxford picked up at the end of the quarter when, after a Sidney basket, junior Scott Seiler hit a running three-pointer at the buzzer from just inside halfcourt for the 39-34 lead. Kyle Smith had a basket and a free throw for Oxford’s lone points of the fourth.

Otselic Valley 56, Lafargeville 53
SOUTH LEWIS – A defensive adjustment in the final minute gave OV the impetus to reverse Lafargeville’s momentum, and propel the Vikings to their first Class D-2 finals appearance in six years.
Down by five points with a minute to play, Robert Guyer scored on a driving basket, David Cerasani scored his only basket of the game following a forced turnover, and Taylor Duell hit two free throws after yet another OV forced turnover. A steal late in the game led to Greg Evans’ pair of made freebies to seal the win.
“We led throughout the game, but they came storming back in the fourth quarter,” said OV coach Dave Loomis, speaking of LaFargeville’s 21-6 fourth-quarter spurt. “They were getting to the basket and just took over, but we put in a little trap at the end, and that made all the difference for us.”
OV had its second straight strong rebounding game getting 11 rebounds from Guyer and 10 apiece from Duell and Evans. “We were a little confused until the end, but we made the plays to win it,” Loomis said. “We’ve had two real good wins against Rome Catholic and Lafargeville. We’re rebounding well and playing good defense, and that’s what you need to do at this point of the season to win games.”
Duell led with 16 points, Guyer added 12, and Cerasani finished with 10 markers. OV plays Lyme or Brookfield Saturday at 11 a.m. at Manley Field House.
