National Weather Service issues storm warning
CHENANGO COUNTY – According to the National Weather Service, more winter weather could be on the way. This morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton issued a winter storm warning for much of New York State, including Chenango County. Depending on the type of precipitation received, Chenango County could possibly see more flooding.
According to City of Norwich Emergency Management Officer A. Wesley Jones, how the precipitation will appear is the real question at this point.
“It all depends on the precipitation,” Jones said. “If we have more ice than rain, we shouldn’t have a problem with flooding.” Jones continued, saying that if the precipitation fell as rain, ice jam flooding could be a problem, since many of the creeks and streams are still covered in ice.
“At this point the weather service is leaning more toward an ice event, turning to rain,” Jones said.
The winter storm warning will be in effect from 6 p.m. tonight until noon on Friday. The NWS says scattered snow showers will develop over the area this afternoon, before transitioning into a steadier mix of sleet and freezing rain. Ice accumulations of up to one half of an inch are likely.
According to the NWS, depending on the severity of the ice accumulations, power outages and falling tree branches could occur.
“Travel will become extremely hazardous,” the NWS warning says. Travelers are advised to exercise caution on the roads.
