Oxford, Norwich fire departments get federal grants

NORWICH – Another competitive federal grant has been awarded to two local fire departments. Norwich and Oxford will receive federal monies totaling $300,861 from the 2006 Assistance to Firefighters Grant.
The City of Norwich Fire Department will receive $148,443 and the Oxford Fire Department will receive $152,418 from the grant. “It’s a competitive grant that Captain Michael Ford researched and applied for. We’ll be spending most of it on protective gear and clothing,” said Norwich Fire Chief Joseph Angelino.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program awards grants to firefighters, emergency response personnel and first responders throughout the nation. The program is mainly designed to enhance the first response capabilities and to protect the emergency personnel responding. The grants provide resources for training, first responder health and safety programs, and response equipment and vehicles.
“This funding will go a long way in supporting the first responders in Chenango County,” said U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer.
Another avid supporter of the bill, U.S. Representative Michael A. Arcuri (D-Utica) said, “I am committed to helping local fire departments and emergency services. I also am proud to be a co-sponsor of legislation, which passed with a bipartisan majority.”
Assistant Fire Chief Ron Martin applied for Oxford’s grant and said the money would be spent on turnout gear, a new hose, nozzles and to purchase a new thermal imager. Oxford’s current imager has been suffering from technical difficulties.
“This money will allow us to purchase equipment that will save us a lot of time, which will help us save lives. What it’s really gonna do is relieve a burden off our taxpayers. We were planning on asking for this equipment in our budget. This will put us years ahead of the system,” said Martin.
