State wrestling championships start today
A Chenango County record 10 wrestlers will take to the mat today between 10 and 10:30 a.m. at the Times Union Center in Albany for the New York State Public High School Wrestling Championships.
B-G/Afton takes four to the event to lead all area teams including champions Danny Gormley (96), Justin Davy (130), Kris Stafford (160), and at-large wild-card selection, Ben Mumbulo (189).
The NYSPHSAA instituted the wild-card format this season to fill out weight classes and require wrestlers to win more matches in order to place in the tournament. Previously, a wrestler with a first-round bye to the quarterfinals needed just an opening-match win to guarantee a place finish.
“It’s the state tournament and the best of the best,” said UV first-year coach Jim DuVall. “Every kid should wrestle matches to place.”
DuVall boasts of three state tournament qualifiers beginning with his nephew, Greg DuVall (103), who won his first sectional crown over teammate Tyler Peet at the Section IV Division One finals two weeks ago. Shayne Wilcox (135), a section champion in 2006, earned a wild-card bid after a second-place finish to Johnson City’s two-time section champion, Peter Capone. T.J. Brownell (152) also gained an at-large selection finishing second to Adrian Ngo of Johnson City.
“It should be interesting to see how this wild-card system pans out,” DuVall said. “It’s nice to have kids in there that maybe suffered their first loss or an upset loss. This is a chance for them to redeem themselves.”
Among the Chenango County representatives, Nick Wilcox (119) of Greene is the lone grappler returning as a sectional champion. Wilcox claimed the 103-pound state title a year ago, but narrowly avoided a loss in the Division Two finals rallying for a 6-4 victory. His teammate, Tyler Beckwith (145) is making his first appearance in the tournament after a sectional win.
Chris Pike (275) of Sherburne-Earlville ended a long drought between sectional titlists at his school. Pike earned his team’s first section title in nearly two decades at the Section III tournament two weeks ago. The best S-E finish since that time was back-to-back sectional finals appearances for Mike Donnelly (1996, 1997).
Danny Gormley (96), and eighth-grader for B-GA, and Kris Stafford (160) won their first sectional titles, while Ben Mumbulo (189), a senior for the Bears, grabbed a wild-card spot after his third straight top-four finish in the section tournament.
Wrestlebacks and semifinals matches are slated for a 10 a.m. start Saturday morning.
