Wilcox finishes second in state

ALBANY – For the first time this decade, a Chenango County wrestler did not bring home a state championship.
Nick Wilcox of Greene, a returning state champion, placed second, while B-G/Afton had three of its four wrestlers finish among the top six in their respective weight classes.
Wilcox, a freshman, was the reigning 103-pound state champion, and he was impressive in his route to the finals pinning third-place finisher, Eric Velez (Section XI) in 3:05.
His finals appearance was a rematch with Section V’s Ian Paddock, who was a returning state champion a year ago, but was beaten by Wilcox in the 103-pound semifinals en route to the title.
Paddock led 2-0 after a first-period takedown, and took control in the second period tilting Wilcox three separate times for back points and an impressive 13-0 advantage. Midway through the final period, Paddock completed a single-leg takedown sweeping Wilcox’s leg for the winning points by technical fall. It was just the second loss this season for Wilcox and sixth of his three-year varsity career.
Danny Gormley (96) and Justin Davy (130) wrestled back for fifth-place finishes to lead B-GA, while Ben Mumbulo (189) took home a sixth.
Gormley, just an eighth-grader, won his two matches Friday to reach the state semifinals before losing a 10-0 decision to eventual state champion, Kyle Crisafulli of Section III. Gormley dropped a 4-3 decision in his first wrestlebacks matchup, but edged Quinton Murphy of Section V, 5-4, for fifth place.
“We knew every match would be tough, and Danny learned that you need takedowns up here to win,” said B-G/Afton coach Brandon MacNaught. “You can’t take things for granted because you never know if you’ll be up here again.”
Davy took the long road to a state place finish, and had an unlucky first-round match drawing eventual state champion, Mike Nevinger of Section V. After a 10-2 defeat, Davy won four of five matches – two by a point and one by two points – and escaped in the third overtime with one second remaining to nudge past Tony DeFranco of Section III, 3-2. “It was awful close, and it’s a great way for Justin to finish his career,” MacNaught said.
Mumbulo (189) won his first two matches before dropping a 6-5 decision in the state semifinals to eventual champion, Anthony Austin of Section III.
Unadilla Valley’s Greg DuVall (103), T.J. Brownell (152), and Shayne Wilcox (135) did not place, while Sherburne-Earlville’s Chris Pike was one win from reaching the placement round before suffering a defeat.
Section IV finished fourth in the overall Division II team scoring and ninth in Division I scoring.
