Carpenter tapped to head Commerce Chenango

NORWICH – Commerce Chenango decided to stay within its ranks Monday and hired Maureen P. Carpenter to become the business organization’s new President and CEO.
Carpenter, Commerce Chenango’s current director of economic development, was hired from a pool of nearly a dozen candidates and is expected to takeover for interim President Sewain Conklin by the end of April. Conklin has been filling-in at the top spot since December, when previous president Dave Hall was let go after spending just over one year in the position.
“Maureen has a very strong background in economic development and she’s very familiar with the staff and its operations,” Conklin said. “We felt very confident she could do the job.”
Previously using a nationwide recruiting agency, Conklin said for this hire Commerce Chenango’s search committee was looking for a permanent replacement who was familiar with the area. Carpenter is a life-long resident of Chenango County and has been director of economic development since 2004.
“I’m very excited about this opportunity,” she said. “I’ve aspired to reach this goal for the past few years – I just didn’t think it would happen this soon.”
Conklin said prior to the transition, Carpenter will be receiving additional training in several new areas and her replacement as economic development director will have to be secured. The current president confirmed that the organization plans on conducting a regional and local search to fill the newly-created vacancy.
As president and CEO of Commerce Chenango (formerly known as the Chenango County Chamber of Commerce), Carpenter will assume the role of executive director for Development Chenango (a merger of the Chenango County Area Corporation and the Greater Norwich Local Development Corporation that is being finalized), the county Industrial Development Agency, and the Chenango Foundation.
She said her top priorities include growing Commerce Chenango’s membership numbers, increasing customer satisfaction, finalizing the consolidation of agencies, and moving ahead with the organization’s strategic plan for economic development.
As development director, Carpenter has been charged with developing and implementing plans for the area’s commercial and industrial business sector, monitoring local economic activity and recruiting prospective businesses. She also serves on the Chenango County Planning Board, the Airport Steering Committee, the Southern Tier East Regional Planning Board, and the City of Norwich’s Brownfield Opportunity Areas Committee.
Carpenter lives in South New Berlin with her husband and two children.
