Oxford stages "High School Musical"
OXFORD – This weekend the Oxford Academy Drama Club proudly presents a high school musical called ... “High School Musical.”
“The play is modeled off the Emmy Award-winning television film of the same name and was one of the most successful Disney Channel original movies produced,” said Co-Director and Middle School Band Director Jaclyn Viscardi.
“High School Musical” is a story about two high school students from very different social circles realizing they share a passionate love for music and singing. “Despite others’ attempts to thwart their dreams, Troy and Gabriella (the main characters) persist and inspire others along the way,” Viscardi said. The band director started her involvement in the drama club last year by helping Mike Moren direct “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” Moren has directed several shows and is also the co-director of this weekend’s performances.
The production in the Oxford Academy Performing Arts Auditorium will be staged tonight and Saturday. Both shows will start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door: $5 for adults, $4 for students and senior citizens.
One of the lead performers Will McGuire who plays Troy Bolton, said, “I do it for the fun. People should do this kind of thing if they can’t have fun.” Tori Lints, who plays Gaberiella Montez, said the play has a modern appeal to current students because it focuses on the “clickyiness” of many high schools and shows them the social problems they can create.
“It’s very relevant and speaks to a younger audience,” said Viscardi. “I decided to get involved because I used to be in my high school plays and I wanted to offer that same kind of enjoyment to our students,” she said.
