Chenango goes bare for St. Baldrick's Day
NORWICH – Almost everyone has a connection to cancer, that’s why the St. Baldrick’s fundraiser has become such a popular and important event in Chenango County, and beyond, organizers say.
To raise money specifically for childhood cancer research, 45 local St. Baldrick’s participants will be shaving-off their hair Saturday at the Howard Johnson’s Ballroom in Norwich. The night is open to the public, and those entered will be looking for donations right up until they are clean-shaven.
Andrea MacIntosh says she’s buzzing her head for Shannon, an acquaintance who died from Leukemia at the age of six.
“She had such a hard life,” said MacIntosh, who is a speech and language therapist at Stanford J. Gibson School in Norwich. “The fact is these kids have no control over their pain and suffering – it makes me think about my own children. After Shannon, I had always thought; ‘What can I do? What can I say? What can I offer that will mean something?”
So far the Norwich event has raised $10,500 in the hopes of reaching $20,000 before night’s end. Organizer Tracy Chawgo said everything is coming together, and he’s hoping for a big push come St. Patrick’s Day – known to those involved as “St. Baldrick’s Day.”
“It’s coming together great,” Chawgo said. “We’re getting close to $10,000. Anything we can do helps.”
People of all ages will be cutting it close, including five teams made-up of local firefighters, emergency medical technicians, bartenders, and family members. In what’s becoming a tradition, many of the “shavees” will be dying their hair – often green – prior to the event. MacIntosh said her shoulder-length hair will be rainbow-colored before its hits the ballroom floor.
“I’m excited,” she said.
Registration for the event will begin at 6 p.m., and shaving will begin at 7 p.m. Event sponsors include the Norwich Firefighters Association, Howard Johnson’s Hotel, Studebaker’s Grill and Pub, and DCMO BOCES, who will be donating pre-graduate hairstylists as barbers. A host of area businesses and indivivduals have donated door prizes and other services.
Anyone looking for more information or to donate to local teams and individuals can visit the Norwich event listing by visiting www.stbaldricks.org and entering the area zip code.
