Village elections today
NEW BERLIN – Villagers in Chenango County cast their ballots for 14 positions today with mayoral races in New Berlin and Earlville garnering the most attention. The polls will be open until 9 tonight.
Incumbent New Berlin Mayor Carol Riley faces off against village Trustee Robert T. Star for the two-year position that pays $3,500 annually. Riley is running for her seventh term.
Uncontested for two-year trustee terms in New Berlin are incumbent Terry Potter and Michael Conroe. The trustee position pays $2,500 a year.
Voters in Earlville must choose between first-term Mayor Toni Campbell and challenger Michael Kicinski for the two-year, $2,500-a-year position.
Three people are running for the two-year, $912-a-year trustee positions: Incumbent Kim Boomhower, Carol Lee and Gerald Hayes. The top two vote-getters will be elected. Incumbent Trustee Sandra Holbrook is not seeking re-election. Incumbent Earlville Justice Frank Faulkner is unopposed for the four-year village justice position.
In the Village of Sherburne, Edward La Corte is unopposed for village trustee to fill the one year left in the unexpired term of the late Stanley Braun. La Corte has been serving in the $3,600-a-year position since he was appointed to the post Aug. 7.
In the Village of Afton, incumbent village trustees Gloria Harvey and Ron Zablocki are unopposed for re-election to two-year terms and Girard Matthews, who has served the village as a trustee and interim mayor, will be unopposed for a one-year trustee term to fill a vacancy. The Afton positions pay $1,177 annually.
The Village of Greene will have a new mayor as veteran Trustee Marcia E. Miller is unopposed in her effort to replace 10-year incumbent John Bennett, who chose not to seek re-election to another two-year term. Miller has been a trustee since 1989.
Running unopposed for village trustee are incumbent Ron Williamson, a trustee since 1997, and newcomer Rodney Andrews, who is seeking the seat Miller will vacate to move up to mayor.
Contestants will run unopposed in the villages of Afton, Greene, Sherburne and Smyrna. No elections are scheduled for the Village of Bainbridge. The Village of Oxford will hold its elections in June and the City of Norwich in November.
