Law & Order in ‘08

With the presidential elections only a year away, many candidates have thrown their hats into the ring, and more are being added regularly. And now, the newest addition to the presidential pool, according to CNN, could be Fred Thompson!!!
I know what you’re thinking, “Who the heck is Fred Thompson?” That’s what I thought too when I saw the headline on CNN. Then I saw the picture, and everything became clear. You see, I am a Law & Order buff, and Thompson is one of the regular characters on the show. No not the detective who was in “Dirty Dancing” or the attorney who is in all of those insurance commercials. Thompson is the guy who plays Arthur Branch, the district attorney.
It is not surprising that Branch, or Thompson, or whoever, has expressed interest in running for the top government seat. Many Hollywood types have tried their hands at politics. (Look at that giant mess in California.) What is surprising is that only a few short weeks after Thompson expressed a desire to be president, he is already third in polls for the GOP’s top candidates, and he is only a B-list celebrity.
At least the Law & Order guy has some political background, (and not just the made up kind for the show.) Thompson has expressed his views on abortion and same-sex marriage, but who cares about that stuff? On the show, he puts hundreds of criminals in jail and he can close a case in under an hour. Things are starting to look good for the Republicans, but I have a feeling the Democrats have a few tricks of their own.
What celebrity can the liberals pull out of their bag of tricks? Will it be another Law & Order cast member? I’m predicting this campaign will come down to an all out battle between Sam Waterston (Jack McCoy) and Thompson. They never could get along. Alumni cast members like Benjamin Bratt, S. Epatha Merkerson and Angie Harmon can stop by to endorse their favorite candidate, entertain the potential voters and possibly declare their intentions to run as the vice president. You never know, this Law & Order twist could make this the most entertaining election in history.
