Norwich firefighters honored for service
NORWICH – The Norwich Fire Department held its annual Awards and Recognition Banquet Saturday at the Canasawacta County Club in Norwich.
Because of the high demands placed on the department, including floods, fires and a number of motor vehicle accidents, the firefighter of the year award, which is usually dedicated to an individual, was instead presented to the entire department.
“The year 2006 had two devastating flood events, during which time the entire department distinguished itself. Every member, from the Explorers and Auxiliary, and of course the volunteer and professional firefighters, did a miraculous job to help the community during that awful time. It would have been very difficult to recognize only one member,” said Fire and Police Chief Joseph Angelino.
The ceremony took place in front of a crowd of nearly 200 department members, friends and family.
The event was dedicated in memory of former Mayor Robert Raphael Jr., who passed away last year. The department also recognized the late Gene Yesko and current member Joseph Wagner, for their lifetime achievement and dedication.
Town of Norwich Supervisor David Law presented a certificate to the Fire Department on behalf of the entire Town of Norwich, for the service provided by the members. In addition, each individual fire company recognized their own members for volunteering their time and effort over the past year and honored them with awards for longevity.
The Norwich Fire Department consists of three volunteer engine companies, a rescue company, an auxiliary, an explorer post and a professional staff of firefighters that protect nearly 65 square miles and 20,000 people.
