NORWICH – Town supervisors disagreed Monday that town public works departments should receive an increase in roadside clean up credits from the county.

In March, Public Works Committee members passed and moved a resolution to the full board that would have increased the credit from $100 to $250 per year. In a vote tallying seven supervisors against the action versus 12 for it, the weighted majority of 1,201 needed to pass wasn’t reached. It came close at 1,180.

Supervisors from Coventry, German, McDonough and Smithville were absent.

Town of Oxford Supervisor Lawrence N. Wilcox led the charge against the increase, saying roadside litter “is a town issue.” He also said laws already on the books against littering need to be enforced. “I’d rather use the money to enforce that law, instead of giving people free rein to litter,” he said.
