Town looks to condemn eyesore

NORWICH – After more than a decade of debate about what to do, Town of Norwich officials say they are taking the necessary steps to correct what they call “an eyesore” along state Rte. 12 South.

During a regularly scheduled meeting Monday, the Norwich Town Board discussed what could be done about a residence – known as the Halfway House – that has fallen into disrepair. The residence, and other structures surrounding it, are located near the border with the Town of Oxford.

The property is not safe to live in, according to Supervisor David C. Law, R-Town of Norwich. “It is deplorable,” he said. “I have been there several times to ask for something to be done, and it has not been done. The roof is falling apart, the back steps are crumbling, windows are out, doors are out. It’s simply not safe.”

Law also indicated that children were living in the residence.

The board discussed how the matter has been an issue in the past as well.

“This was the issue, I think 14 years ago and it’s not fixed yet,” said Councilman Charles Brooks.
