‘Fireworks over the Fairground’ to be big county event
NORWICH – This Fourth of July will be the first in Chenango to welcome Millennia Entertainment as a contributor to the “Fireworks over the Fairground.” The group has sponsored several events throughout the area and will be bringing in a nationally-acclaimed country artist, said Managing Partner Terry Potter.
“We felt it would be counter-productive to hold our own event elsewhere in the area and didn’t want to put ourselves in a position to compete ... this way there is much less risk,” said Potter.
The Norwich Fire Department has sponsored the fireworks display at the county fairgrounds for the last seven years. This year a carnival, including games, vendors and possibly even a demolition derby, will be held at the Norwich fairgrounds. “We hope it will resemble something similar to the county’s fair, but not nearly as large,” said Potter. Non-profit organizations will be allowed to set up free of charge at the event.
Millennia Entertainment has made arrangements for one of its highlights to include the NASCAR show cars of Jeff Gordon and Jimmy Johnson, brought to the event by Hendrick Motor Sports from North Carolina.
The group has sponsored many other festivities in the region and contracted such famous artists as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kenny Rogers and Willie Nelson. There will be a national performer at the 4th of July event as well, but negotiations are still under way to have one signed. “It will be a national headliner,” said Potter.
Millenia sponsored a similar event in 2005 at the Otsego County fairgrounds in Morris which drew just under 7,000 patrons. The organization’s goal is to draw as many as 10,000 to 15,000 to the Norwich event.
“We are looking forward, hoping this will become an annual event modeled after the Spiedie Fest in Binghamton,” said Potter.
