County’s business development director selected

NORWICH – The former executive coordinator of the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce - and a native of Norwich - has been named economic development director of Commerce Chenango (formerly the Chenango County Chamber of Commerce).
Jennifer Tavares, daughter of Robert and Karen Kirkby of Norwich, assumes her new role Monday. The position, which also coordinates Empire Zones benefits on behalf of the county, has been vacant since Commerce Chenango’s previous economic development director, Maureen Carpenter, was named president and chief executive officer of the organization last month.
“Over the course of our search, we received many resumes from qualified candidates. We believe Jennifer is an excellent choice and will be a wonderful asset to this community,” Carpenter said. Carpenter begins her new role also on Monday.
Executive coordinator of the Potsdam Chamber since 2005, Tavares has assisted start-up ventures, larger enterprises and downtown businesses in locating financial and government sector resources and forming integral partnerships. The organization enjoyed a 30 percent increase in its annual operating budget and membership base under her leadership.
The Potsdam Chamber of Commerce serves the greater Potsdam business community and is a partner of the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce.
Tavares was previously a vice president of sales and marketing for SunFeather Natural Soap Company of Potsdam. She also worked in radio sales and marketing.
She said she hopes to bring “a lot of insight into ways the economic development field works.”
“Being from Norwich originally, certainly dedication to the community is going to be a strong suit of mine,” she said.
Taveres is a graduate of Norwich High School and received her bachelor’s of arts degree cum laude from Potsdam State University in 1998. She is planning to relocate to the area with her husband, Nick, and their two children.
Members of the selection committee included: Keith Severson, executive director, Cornell Cooperative Extension; Greg Sheldon, chairman of the board, Commerce Chenango; Hugh Kearney, chairman, Chenango County Industrial Development Agency; Peter Chaplin, chairman, Chenango County Area Corporation; Sewain Conklin, interim president & CEO, Commerce Chenango; and Carpenter.
The position is funded by county taxpayers. The chair of the county’s Planning & Economic Development Committee, Linda E. Natoli, R-City of Norwich, said Wednesday that she we unaware of the recent hiring. Chenango County Board of Supervisor Chairman Richard E. Decker, who has previously identified the position as the county’s foremost economic development arm, could not be reached for comment by press time.
