Bricks & Mortar Report
EDITOR’S NOTE: The Bricks & Mortar Report will provide updates every Monday on major construction projects in Chenango County.
Employment stats:
• The Chenango County Office of Employment and Training reported a 5.7 percent unemployment rate in March. The figure compares to a 5.8 rate in March of 2006.
• Chenango County is ranked 45 in the state.
Halfway House Bridge (County Route 32B):
• Bids are due back to the Chenango County Public Works Department May 24th for this $3 million bridge replacement project. Adjacent properties on the state Rte. 12 side of the structure were purchased last month in order to accommodate the new span’s more south-westerly entrance.
• “We hope to get a good start on it this year, especially if we have a decent construction season,” DPW Director Randy Gibbon said.
• The project has an anticipated fall 2008 completion date.
Norwich Business Improvement District:
• The City of Norwich and the Business Improvement District will be replacing the broken and loose bluestone striping throughout the downtown area with a poured synthetic product that will be imprinted. This is the same material that was used for crosswalk and median areas downtown.
• Construction is scheduled to begin in May.
• BIDMA executive director, Pegi S. LoPresti, said the entire removal and new installation should take place within approximately one week - depending on weather conditions.
New York State Veterans’ Home:
• This $66 million 220,000 square feet project underway in the Town of Oxford has an anticipapted June 2008 completion date, according to the New York State Housing Authority.
• Steel framing has been erected on the hillside overlooking the Chenango River. Roofing is slated to begin shortly and continue over the next two months. Contractors expect to be watertight by summer’s end. Siding will follow.
• The replacement building - which is about 50 percent larger than the current structure - will be paid for with a $43 million federal grant and state Department of Health and Veteran’s funds.
• DOH officials have said the additional space included larger rooms, wider corridors, private rooms with baths, access to computer and Internet, televisions, unit specific dining rooms with country kitchens and “a main street” concept where all therapies, shops and activities are accessible.
• Town of Oxford Supervisor Lawrence Wilcox said he anticipated an increase in the number of jobs offered at the new facility. “I understood there would be an increase, but have not been notified by the state. It sure would be great news - especially that calibre of jobs. It would be a great plus for Oxford and for the county, for that matter,” he said.
Visions Credit Union:
• Construction began last week at the new branch of VISIONS Federal Credit Union on state Rte. 12 South in the Town of Norwich within Lowe’s shopping plaza.
• The 2,000 square foot full service branch will offer 14-hour walk up and drive-up ATMs.
• Architects have incorporated the history of the Chenango Canal within the building’s interior plans, calling for earth-toned tile floors and rustic wood beams.
•A temporary loan center for Vision Credit Union will open May 15.
