Legion poker run to benefit wounded veterans

NORWICH – Local American Legionnaires will be taking to the open road this Saturday to help wounded combat veterans who are recovering far away from the comforts of home.
To raise money for the Landstuhl Hospital Care Project, May 5 the Legion Riders from Warren E. Eaton Post 189 in Norwich are holding their second Annual Benefit “Poker Run,” an 80 mile motorcycle ride through Chenango County.
“We’re trying to give something back to the guys who have given all,” said event organizer and Legion Rider Bill Fowler. “Anything that will make their lives a little bit easier.”
Landstuhl Hospital is a U.S. Military Treatment Facility in Germany where many injured servicemen and servicewomen are taken directly from the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since most wounded veterans arrive with only the hospital garments they have on, the care project, started in 2004 by a military mother who visited the hospital, provides comfortable clothing, basic supplies and numerous items aimed at improving a soldier’s quality of life while they heal.
“Many of these brave individuals arrive at Landstuhl directly from the battlefield – no clothing, no shoes, and definitely no comfort or hygiene items,” said Legion Rider’s President Paul Russo.
The care project also sends supplies to field hospital in Iraq and Afghanistan. Break-away pants, cast socks, and plain long-sleeve T-shirts top the current list of the urgently needed items.
Russo said the number of wounded in the Middle East has risen to 50,000, making this effort that much more important.
“That number will only grow,” Russo said.
Project volunteers keep track of supplies and demands at Landstuhl, and shipments are sent monthly.
“Anything we can do to make the transition a little more pleasant is absolutely the least we can do,” said Fowler.
The poker run will consist of an 80 mile ride through Chenango County. At various stops, including the New York state Veteran’s Home, participants will draw cards and try to make the best poker hand. The entry cost $10, with all proceeds going to the Landstuhl veterans. All registered motorcycles and riders over 18 are welcome. Sign-in will begin at 10 a.m. at Post 189 on 29 Sheldon St. in Norwich. The run will end at the Road House Barbecue on Route 12 in North Norwich, where there will be awards, prizes and food waiting.
