S-E stages late rally; beats Sauquoit Valley for first time

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville staged a seventh-inning rally to force extra innings, and scored in the bottom of the ninth for its first win over Sauquoit Valley since joining the Center State Conference five years ago.
“This is a great win for us against a tough division opponent,” said S-E coach Scott Fitzpatrick, who added that Sauquoit Valley along with Canastota have been measuring sticks for their league.
Katie Graham and Dana Hodge singled to start the seventh, and Sam Crandall walked to load the bases. Back-to-back RBI groundouts by Megan Record and Bree Neisinger pulled S-E within one, and Crandall scored on a passed ball.
Hodge scored the game-winner in the ninth on a infield grounder.
Hodge led her club with three hits, while Kate Fitzpatrick, Graham and Lindsay Hodges had two hits apiece. Record and Fitzpatrick led with two ribbies.

Emily Sugar broke up Greene pitcher Megan McDermott’s no-hitter with a single in the sixth.
In the latter contest, Sara Ostrander had two hits and two RBI, and Beth Ludwig supported her own pitching effort wth two hits and two runs scored. “Our bats came alive in that second game, but unfortunately our defense went down in that game,” said Greene coach Rick Smith.
The Trojans (6-1, 8-3) play at Unatego Friday.

NORWICH – Windsor pitcher Kyle Krause mastered Norwich not with velocity but with guile and precision fanning 15 Tornado batters in a shutout Wednesday.
“He was really good at getting that first-pitch strike and getting up in the count early,” said Norwich coach John Martinson of Krause. “He had a tremendous curve and kept us off balance all day. Our guys were second- and third-guessing at the plate all night long.”
Jordan Doolittle doubled twice for the Black Knights and drove in one run. Norwich (2-8) plays at Chenango Forks Friday.

DEPOSIT – Oxford did all of its damage during a the fourth through sixth innings to win for the 12th time in 13 games this season Wednesday at Deposit.
Pat Wade was a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs, and smacked a three-run homer in the fifth to move the Blackhawks up 6-1. Steve Locke added a 3-for-4 day, and Ben Burdick aided his own pitching cause with two hits and two runs scored.
The Blackhawks’ defense played spotless, and Chris Palmer noted two infield double plays turned, and gave special mention to the sterling defense his entire team played.

Scoring 11 runs in the third inning, the Marauders blew the game open en route to their first win. “We’ve probably taken 500 swings in the last week of practice, and it showed tonight,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks. “All of our games were close and we were outhitting teams. We knew it would turn around. Every kid in our lineup that had an at-bat had a hit tonight. Every aspect of the game we played our best.”
Nolan Fuller went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBI; Drew Doscher had three hits and four RBI; Sam McLain also had three hits and four RBI, and Dustin Brooks rapped out three hits.
Dylan Harris gave up one run in four innings of work to pick up the win.

Cerasani had a perfect game through five innings before some defensive breakdowns occurred. “He’s pitched an inning here and there, but really this was his first sustained outing,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “He did a nice job for us.”

AFTON – B-G put together back-to-back three-run innings in the fourth and fifth to rally past Afton Wednesday.
Ray Neubauer’s two-run triple with one out in the fifth broke a 3-3 tie, and Ryan Reynolds followed with an RBI sacrifice fly.
Greg Dicks overcame a shaky start to hold Afton to just one run over the final five innings. “He picked it up after the first two innings, and we really didn’t have many opportunities to score after that,” said Afton coach Ron Rapp of Dicks. “He threw a lot of ground-ball outs, and the defense did what it needed to do.”
Neubauer and Dicks led with two hits and two ribbies, while Chris McGinnis added two hits and two runs scored.

CHERRY VALLEY – Following a pair of errors that put runners in scoring position, the Patriots’ Mathias Vanderwerker hit a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth leading the host club to a win over G-MU Wednesday.
All eight runs in the contest, said G-MU coach Jim Johnson, were unearned. Johnson also said that four of his team’s five miscues were by throwing or catching a throw. “It’s frustrating, but we played well against a pretty good team,” Johnson said.
Johnson lauded hurler Cody Hall, who fanned five CV-S players and allowed just four hits. Tim Sloan had a two-run single for G-MU in the third and finished 2-for-3.

OWEGO – Norwich eighth-graders, Hannah Killean and Katie Orioli, placed first and third in the pole vault to close out the meet and secure Norwich’s second victory this season.
Carly Law picked up a victory in the long jump, her first win this season in that event. Overall, Norwich won four of six field events with Cassidy Griffin (high jump) and Minda Moore (shot put) added firsts.
Owego’s boys jumped out quickly against the Tornado, and handed the Purple their most lopsided loss of the season. “We held our own in the field events,” said Norwich co-head coach Phil Curley of the boys’ side. “They had a lot of one-two finishes and we had to settle for a lot of thirds. That put us in a big hole.”
Jesse Prosser had a season-best 23.8 seconds to win the 200-meter dash, and he added a win in the long jump.
Norwich hosts the REK Invitational Friday at 5 p.m.
