Rogers Center hosts earth-friendly celebration

SHERBURE – The Rogers Environmental Education Center in Sherburne will hold an earth-friendly celebration from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The event this weekend will be a combination celebration for May Day, Earth Day and Arbor Day.
“There are so many wonderful things going on,” said Laura Carey, environmental educator at Rogers. The event will begin with traditional maypole dancing at noon, and guests will be welcome to join in.
A wide variety of events for every age group will be available. The Compost Theater will perform at 1 p.m. According to Carey, the group performs comedic skits about recycling, composting and other environmental issues. Barb Collins, from Solstice Whole Foods, will lead a weed walk at 2:30 p.m. and countless other activities, including canoe and kayak tryouts, artist demonstrations, vegetarian cooking demonstrations, kid’s stories, a scavenger hunt and a fly-tying demonstration will be going on through out the day.
Children will be able to learn about the basic needs through a fairy house building activity that will be held at 2 p.m. Participants will use natural items in the woods to build a fairy house with everything a fairy might need. “We did this activity last year, and it was a lot of fun,” said Carey.
The day will also feature informational sessions including a tire pressure check for better gas mileage and a carbon footprint calculator, which will show people what things to do to put less carbon in the environment. A Nyserta Energy Bike demonstration will allow participants to pedal the bike and attempt to run different electrical appliances, showing how much energy the appliances actually use.
According to Carey, May Day is a celebration of coming out of winter and into spring, Earth Day is held to learn about appreciating and caring for the earth, and Arbor Day is dedicated to appreciating, planting and caring for trees. “We put all of those ideas together into a one-day event,” said Carey.
Kids and adults a like will enjoy a wide array of activities, demonstrations and workshops. “The overall goal is to help people learn about environmentally friendly practices and how easily we can make small changes that will make a big difference to the environment,” said Carey. “We hope people will come, have a good time, and go away ready to make positive changes for a better community and a better environment.”
