NORWICH – Norwich found itself nearly running uphill against a powerful M-E boys team in suffering its most lopsided defeat of the season, while only winning three events.
“They’re very good and very fast,” said Norwich co-head coach Phil Curley. “Normally we do well in the sprints, but they swept the 100 meters and finished one-two in the 200 meters.”
One of Norwich’s highlights was sophomore Steven Spittler’s nail-biting win in the 3200 meters. Staying on M-E harrier Tyler Conklin’s shoulder most of the race, Spittler edged in front down the final stretch to time a 10:42.6 and win by two-tenths of a second.
Keegan Edwards cleared a season-best 11 feet in the pole vault for first place, and Nate Foote won the long jump (18-11 1/4).
Norwich’s girls were swept in the three longest distance races (800, 1500, 3000 meters) and the 3200-meter relay to allow the Spartans a 32-point advantage. Still, Curley was impressed with his team’s resolve to tighten up the final scoring. “We knew we’d be in a hole because of their distance runners, but that’s a heck of a fight to give up that many points and battle back,” he said.
Carly Law grabbed wins in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles, and Minda Moore was a double individual event winner taking the shot put and discus.
The Norwich girls compete Friday in the Rotary Invitational at Maine-Endwell, while the Tornado boys compete at the Parkhurst Invitational at U-E High School on Saturday.
