Norwich gears up for after-prom party
NORWICH – With underage drinking and drug usage on the rise, parents, teachers and community members are stepping up and taking action to ensure their kids will be in good hands this prom season.
The prom, for thousands of high school students across the nation, is a time for celebration and happiness. Unfortunately, prom season is also a time when teenage decision making regarding drinking and other destructive behaviors remains high.
Each year, as reported on by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, roughly 5,000 young people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage drinking.
To help ensure students are safe this prom season, after prom party coordinators are gearing up for another fun-filled night following the prom.
Doors open at midnight at the Norwich Family YMCA with limited activity and the fun begins at 1 a.m. and lasts until 5 a.m. following Saturday’s junior prom at Norwich High. Approximately 175 students attended last year, and coordinators are anticipating roughly the same turnout this year. Event Chair Marilyn Oliver says everyone always has a great time and parents know where their children are and that they are safe. There are 25-30 chaperones expected to attend.
The party is free to attend and students attending the prom are encouraged, but not required to participate. For students who choose to attend the party and not attend the prom, a $5 charge applies. Activities being held include a walk-in money grabbing machine, charicatures, a hypnotist and magic show, a bungee run, a sticky wall and other various games. Prizes are awarded throughout the night with the grand prizes awarded at 4:30 a.m., and the winner must be present.
Top prizes, donated from local and some out of town merchants, include a $200 paintball party for 12 people at Mayhood’s, two $500 gift cards for the Carousel and Oakdale malls, sleeping bags, a digital camera, a Dell laptop computer and an Ipod. The grand prize will be awarded to the one junior who is lucky enough to have their name selected and will win $1,000. There will also be free food all night.
“There will be something there for everyone,” said Oliver. “This is all possible through the help of community donations and their continuous support.”
This year the prom court crowning will be held at 8:30 p.m., in the auditorium. Tickets are available when students purchase prom tickets and some will be available at the door. For more information contact Oliver at 334-6473.
