S-E falls in 10 innings

Baseball

Cooperstown 6, S-E 2 (10 innings)
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville was unable to cash in on its baserunners late in the game, and Cooperstown was able to solve S-E hurler Sam McClain in the tenth inning.
McClain struck out nine in the contest and had six one-two-three innings in a career-long outing. In the 10th, however, the Redskins loaded the bases, and Phillip Pohl’s pop-up behind third base hit the chalk line scoring two runs.
The Marauders left 15 runners on base including runners in scoring position in the third, fifth, and seventh innings – all established with no outs. “We’re young and maybe a little overwhelmed in the moment,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks. “It was a learning experience and a good game, but I’m just not sure whey we couldn’t come up with the clutch hit.”
McClain, one of four S-E seniors honored before the game, had his best game of the season, Hicks said. “I can’t say enough good things about him, he really gutted it out tonight,” the S-E mentor said. “We’re playing our best baseball of the season now, that’s what you want to be doing at the end of the season, and the fan support was great.”
The Marauders scored their only two runs in the first inning. Caleb Brown hit an RBI triple, and Brown came home on Drew Doscher’s grounder to shortstop that was misplayed. Brown, McLain, Dylan Harris, and Mike McCredy all had two hits for S-E (5-7).

Chenango Valley 13, Norwich 4
NORWICH – Chenango Valley did all of its damage in the first two innings building a 13-0 lead to beat the Tornado on Friday.
Eric Bidwell hit a two-run single to highlight a five-run first, and five Tornado errors in the second frame combined with four hits had NHS reeling. “They really are a powerhouse team, they sat on the fastball, and hit the gaps well,” said Norwich coach John Martinson.
Two of Norwich’s bright spots were pitcher Christian Hotaling and hitter Luke Hinlicky. Hotaling pitched five innings of scoreless relief, while Hinlicky was 3-for-3 with a double, triple, and three RBI.
Norwich wraps up its schedule today at home against Oneonta.

Sidney 5, Greene 2
SIDNEY – A pair of miscues led to four unearned runs in the second for Sidney, who defeated Greene on Friday.
A one-out infield error scored Brett Pendorf with the first run, and a throwing error on a soft grounder up the middle scored the second run. Andy Kozak ended Sidney’s quartet of runs with a two-run single. “You can’t spot a good team any runs at all, and we had one inning where we spotted them four,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton.
Greene was as close as 4-2 after 4 1/2 innings getting an RBI hit from Brock Rowe. Trojans hurler Nate Whittaker suffered his second tight loss to Sidney this season striking out six, walking two, and giving up six hits. “I felt it was the best Nate has pitched all year,” Gorton said. “His change-up was really unhittable today, and there were no really hard-hit balls against him.”
Whittaker’s mound counterpart, Aubrey Wood, was even better than Whittaker striking out seven and giving up just three hits. “Wood pitched fantastic, and I thought that was best I’ve seen him pitch over the last two seasons,” Gorton said. “He was able to overpower us all game long.”
Greene (11-6) plays at Oxford today.

Oxford 11, Afton 5
AFTON – Oxford, ranked among the top five in the state, used a late-game push to pull away from upset-minded Afton Friday afternoon.
Ben Burdick hit a two-run homer in the fourth as the Blackhawks (16-1) clung to a 6-5 lead, but three runs in the sixth and a single tallies in the fifth and seventh ended the upset bid.
“Oxford kept plugging away, and the biggest things is that they capitalized on our errors,” said Afton coach Ron Rapp. “Every imperfection we had, they took full advantage. They were always threatening and their baserunning was phenomenal.”
Burdick finished with two hits, while Jake Vincent and Steve Locke added two hits and two RBI apiece.
Jake Snyder led Afton with a 3-for-3 day and two ribbies.

James Peek hit a two-run single to score the winning runs – his only hit of the game.
Mason Wyman finished with a six-hit complete game striking out six, walking three, and finishing with four scoreless innings to earn the win. “Mason was on all night, and the team fed off his energy,” said UV coach Gary Alford.
Matt Potter went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Jake Curtis connected for two hits and drove in one run.

G-MU 5, Laurens 0
COPES CORNERS – A little wildness for Cody Hall wasn’t such a bad thing.
Normally around the plate, Hall walked four Laurens batters, but he will surely trade those free passes for his first career no-hitter. He finished with nine strikeouts in the game in another strong performance.
“He pitched well against Cherry Valley and pitched well into the sixth inning against Edmeston,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson. “He deserved some good luck for a change.”
And about the troubles with his control, Johnson explained: “He wasn’t as accurate as usual, and that worked out good. When he’s around the plate, maybe he’s a little easier to hit.”
Tim Sloan finished with two hits and three RBI to support Hall, and Luke Acanfora added a pair of hits and one ribbie.

Softball

S-E 12, Cooperstown 0
SHERBURNE – The Marauders put up a half-dozen runs in the second inning, and sophomore hurler Lindsay Hodges tossed a one-hit shutout against the Redskins Friday.
Heather Barley hit a two-run single in the second, and Dana Hodge, Dee Holden, Kate Fitzpatrick, and Katie Graham added RBI hits.
Hodges took a no-hitter into the sixth before giving up an infield single from Cailin Huggins. She finished with eight strikeouts. “We’ve definitely improved our hitting a lot over last season,” summed up S-E coach Scott Fitzpatrick, whose club improved to 7-5.
S-E’s overall team batting average is up over 100 points from 2006, and with 15 hits against Cooperstown, that is likely to increase. Barley was 4-for-5 from her lead-off spot, Katie Graham tripled twice and finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, Erica Natoli had two hits, and Fitzpatrick finished with two ribbies.
