S-E holds special ed prom Friday

SHERBURNE – Students in Dawn Dando’s special education program at Sherburne-Earlville will be experiencing something a little different this weekend. Just one day before the school holds its Junior Prom, Dando’s students will have their own Special Programs Prom.

“Typically this population of students never gets included in anything in regular education, so I came up with the idea to separate and become our own entity,” said Dando.

This is the second year for the Special Programs Prom, and Dando hopes the event will be even more successful than it was last year. Students from BOCES cosmetology class will be helping the students with hair and make-up, and over 30 dresses have been donated to the classroom so far.

“Last year was the first year we offered the prom, and it was a huge success,” said Dando. Approximately 30 students from Sherburne-Earlville and BOCES special education classes attended the event.

Parents and area businesses have donated gifts and services to the event. One student’s parents volunteered to have a limo pick up each of Dando’s students to bring to the prom. Another parent will be donating boutonnieres for the boys. Area businesses have donated 45 prizes to be given to the students, which means everyone will receive at least one, and the prizes include a television set, a DVD player, a track phone and many other prizes.
