Grand jury indicts suspected Oxford drug dealer

NORWICH – A suspected Oxford drug dealer was indicted on several counts by the Chenango County Grand Jury this week.
Corey A. Weidman, 22 of Merchant Street, Oxford, was indicted on three counts of third degree criminal sale of a controlled substance (Class B felony), one count of third degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (Class B felony), two counts of third degree criminal possession of a weapon (Class D felony), seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested Weidman March 27, after a three-month investigation. During this investigation, undercover police officers allegedly bought cocaine from Weidman three different times at three different locations: Feb. 20 from his parents’ home in Oxford, Feb. 27 at a New Berlin residence and on March 15 in an Oxford parking lot near Main Street.
The Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, C-Net Narcotics Unit and Oxford Police Department executed a “no knock” search warrant at Weidman’s residence. Police discovered approximately one ounce of processed cocaine with a street value of about $1,500. Police also confiscated a .22 caliber revolver handgun, a switch blade knife and assorted drug paraphernalia.
At the time of his arrest, Weidman was on probation for a prior felony drug conviction of criminal possession of a controlled substance in 2004. Weidman did not have a permit for the hand gun and would not have been eligible for one because of his probationary status.
Special Prosecutor James H. Fertig asked for bail to be placed at $1 million, saying, “Because of the severity of the charge, your honor, there is a good chance he may flee, and because of the charge, we are going to be asking for an extremely high bail. In fact, we would ask that no bail be set.”
The County Court remanded Weidman to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $500,000 cash bail, but because Weidman had violated his probation, he would not be eligible for release even if bail was posted.
