Judging the judgmental

It’s been almost a year since I started working here at The Evening Sun, and during that time I have learned a lot about the community and the little world in which we live. I have discovered there are some great people doing some great things, but if you judged the community solely by the comments of those posting in the online version of ‘30 Seconds,’ you would probably think the community was full of rude, bigoted gossips.
Yesterday, as part of my daily routine, I was reading through the posts in the online version of ‘30 Seconds’ and the Forum. I was not surprised to see several snarky comments about people with piercings and tattoos. (I guess this is relatively minor when you think of all the other people that have been insulted simply for living their own lives.)
In the last few months, the same few individuals (I’m guessing) have insulted the elderly, the obese, the low-income families, the disabled, and everyone who has ever shopped at Wal-Mart, not to mention the real controversial individuals, like the transgendered, pregnant teens, homosexuals and anyone affiliated with any political. Have we covered everything?
I’m not saying I’m perfect, or that I never judge anyone, but unlike the many people who hurry to post their nasty comments on the Internet for the whole world to see, I was taught if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be pregnant at 15 and have to decide how I wanted to spend the rest of my life, or to feel like I was born into the wrong gender, or to be a Republican. Those are things I’ve never experienced, so I don’t know how I would react, and most of the people posting these comments don’t either. In fact, I’m sure that several of them do it just to get others riled up, but that’s another topic, all its own.
I’m all for a good healthy debate, but debate involves logic and reason, not comments like “old people smell.” That’s the type of elementary school rhetoric that got old by the time third grade rolled around.
In my opinion, the whole community would be a much better place if people would stop complaining about every group of people around and every tiny thing they dislike, and start focusing on some positive things. (Yes, they do exist.) If you don’t understand a person’s situation, stop judging them and if you can’t be friendly, then simply mind your own business. If we all worried a little more about our own lives and a little less about everyone else’s, things might start to look just a little better.
