Bainbridge gears up for annual Regatta

BAINBRIDGE – The Bainbridge community is preparing to host more than 5,000 visitors this week to kick off the 45th annual General Clinton Canoe Regatta.
Opening ceremonies for the race are set to begin this Friday at 6:30 p.m. at General Clinton Park.
The regatta is a world championship 70-mile flat water endurance race which starts at Otsego Lake, Cooperstown, and finishes at General Clinton Park in Bainbridge.
“We enjoy helping the community and promoting our local area,” said Pam LeFever, the Regatta chairperson. This is LeFever’s fifth year as Regatta chairperson and she is referred to as “the five star general,” by her colleagues, she said.
This year’s event will attract nearly 50 exhibitors and vendors. The grounds of the General Clinton Park on Rt. 7 will be transformed into a weekend carnival complete with rides, food and even a 25-foot rock climbing wall. Fireworks displays will cap off the evenings on Saturday and Sunday.
Due to last year’s flood damage, considerable work had to be done to make repairs and get this year’s race set up and a fundraising campaign was organized by LeFever prior to the event to help offset those costs.
The Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce orchestrates the event and a major portion of the money raised goes back into the community. “We use the money for a number of things such as the farmer’s market and the garden club. We also donate to local school programs to name a few,” said Chamber of Commerce Secretary Helen Hernandez. The event is supported in great part by the local businesses, some making considerable monetary contributions while others donate materials such bottles of water.
The entire event at the park is operated and organized by Chamber of Commerce and its volunteers. Oversight of the actual canoe race is done by the Race Committee.
The race first began in 1963 with 45 participants making the 70-mile trek from Cooperstown to Bainbridge for a prize of $200 because local businessmen wanted to increase tourism.
The Regatta this weekend will feature 10 races over four days, with an estimated 1,500 participants from all over the United States and Canada. The top prize in the pro division is $3,000 and a combined total of $25,000 worth of prizes will be available.
There will be no charge for parking on Friday’s opening, but Saturday the charge will be $7 per car load and on Sunday it will be $5 per car load. The Chamber offers a spectator’s guide to anyone desiring to learn more about the event or you can visit their website at www.canoeregatta.org.
