Norwich poetry team scores another victory
NORWICH – The Norwich High School has consistently nurtured a growing body of students with an increased capability of comprehending and expressing themselves through the art of poetry.
Recently the Norwich poetry team brought home yet another first place banner to decorate the interior of the school’s library. The banners lining the wall represent eight consecutive years of first-place dominance at the Annual Bright Hill Press, New York State high school poetry competition at the State University College of Oneonta.
This year’s event had 37 students from seven different schools competing in four categories: performance, nature, current events and formal.
Margaret Brower won first place in performance, Chelsea Butcher won first place in current events, Keegan Edwards took second in current events and Kristen Tomanocy won first place in nature. Teammates Joe Shaver and Tyler Cooper both placed in the top 10 over all.
The team will be traveling to the Bright Hill Press Center in Treadwell this week to perform an encore of their performance at Oneonta.
“Poetry has always allowed me to directly engage between language and experience, to investigate and appreciate the subtle relations between all things,” said 12th grade English teacher and team coach, Richard Bernstein.
Bernstein has coached the team and started the poetry club over 20 years ago, in 1986. Since then the high school has endorsed a poetry elective as part of its curriculum. The elective and club draw a number or writers interested in many different kinds of literature such as play writers, want-to-be novelists and short story writers. “It’s all about becoming a better writer and not just a poet,” said Bernstein.
Bernstein is a published poet and competed last year at Ithaca in the National Poetry competition, placing 80th in the country.
Many of the members of the poetry club hone their skills at local cafes and poetry gatherings. Students still attend poetry slams at the Coffee Connection in Norwich monthly. “I believe besides driving up to Oneonta or Binghamton, it’s the only local venue to do slams anymore,” said Bernstein.
