'Emerson Drive' to perform at Norwich July 4th event
NORWICH – Millennia Entertainment and the Norwich Fire Department are coordinating an Independence Day jubilee and announced this week they have hired a nationally-acclaimed country group to perform for the crowd.
Known as a country “boy band,” Emerson Drive will be lighting up the stage at the first ‘Fireworks over the Fairgrounds’ celebration this year on July 4. “Last week they were in the top 40 country artists,” said Millennia Managing Partner Terry Potter.
The group, in 2002, won the Academy of Country Music’s award for Top New Vocal Duo or Group. Emerson Drive was also nominated for a “Top Vocal Group of the Year” award at the 2007 Country Music awards.
They were named Top New Vocal Duo/Group by the Academy of Country Music in 2003. The group’s music video for the song “Fall Into Me,” received a nomination for “Breakthrough Video of the Year” in the 2003 Country Music Television Video Music Awards. Also Emerson Drive won a Billboard Music Award for “New Country Artist of the Year” in 2002.
The group has appeared at the Canadian Country Music Awards and won Group or Duo of the Year for 2002 and 2003. In 2002, the band was honored with the Chevy Truck Rising Star Award. The group has been repeatedly nominated over a dozen times for the Canadian Country Music Awards.
Millennia Entertainment has sponsored several events throughout the area that have brought nationally acclaimed country artists, said Potter.
The Norwich Fire Dept. has sponsored the fireworks display for the last seven years and will be co-coordinators for this year’s event at the county fairgrounds in Norwich. Tickets will be going on sale in mid-May and will cost $15 per car load or family pass and $7 for an individual pass, said Potter.
The Ross Park Zoo will be sending its popular zoomobile to the event, featuring rare birds of prey, exotic reptiles and more.
Another new development in the growing festivities is the addition of a family fun zone, themed “Reading in our Lives.” The area will be aimed at children and families and will have at least six fully dressed reading mascots, including Winnie the Pooh, Clifford the Big Red Dog and more. There will also be a stage set up in the area for contributors to sponsor book readings.
A small carnival, including games and vendors will also be at the gathering. “We hope it will resemble something similar to the county’s fair, but not nearly as large,” said Potter. Non-profit organizations will be allowed to set up free of charge at the event.
The group has also invited State Sen. Thomas Libous to come and visit for the day.
Millennia has made arrangements to include the NASCAR show cars of Jeff Gordon and Jimmy Johnson, brought to the event by Hendrick Motor Sports from North Carolina.
The group has sponsored many other festivities in the region and contracted such famous artists as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kenny Rogers and Willie Nelson.
Millennia sponsored a similar event in 2005 at the Otsego County fairgrounds in Morris which drew just under 7,000 patrons. The organization’s goal is to draw as many as 10,000 to the Norwich event.
