8th grader heads to National Spelling Bee

NORWICH – Memorizing the dictionary is a task many people may not chose to take part in, but one middle school student says it’s not that bad.
Hayley Chwazik-Gee, an eighth grader from Norwich Middle School, is on her way to Washington D.C. to compete against hundreds of other children nation-wide at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Chwazik-Gee says she had never really heard about spelling bee competitions before this year, and she thought it would be fun to try. Hayley won a spelling bee in January at the middle school and continued on to the regional spelling bee sponsored by The Daily Star in Oneonta. Her win in Oneonta included a Webster’s third new world unabridged dictionary, a $100 savings bond, gift certificates to Amazon.com, a plaque and an all-expense-paid trip for two to Washington, D.C. to compete on the national level.
In preparation for her trip, Chwazik-Gee says she has study sheets to practice and is reading through the words of the new world dictionary that the spelling bee is based on. Contestants come from all over the nation, but only about 50 make it on stage, said Chwazik-Gee. The first round is a multiple choice test and she explains that is the round where many of the contestants will get cut. Contestants who get cut receive $100 just for getting that far.
Chwazik-Gee explains preparing and studying is difficult, due to the fact no one knows what words they will get from the 2,700 page book. The winner of the Scripps contest will receive $20,000. Chwazik-Gee, her mother and sister leave for Washington for a week-long trip May 27, and the competition will be held live May 31. The show will air live on ESPN from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the finals will air live on ABC from 8 to 10 p.m.
“I’m really excited, but it is also a little nerve-wracking,” said Chwazik-Gee.
