Norwich police, firefighters try out new rescue equipment
NORWICH – The Norwich City Police and Fire Departments have a new water rescue device which could prove to be vital in an emergency.
“It’s simple, inexpensive, light weight and if a person has thrown a Frisbee, they can throw this disk,” said City Police Chief Joseph Angelino of the department’s recently-acquired “ResQ Discs,” large Frisbee-like flotation devices that can be thrown up to 100 feet accurately. The bright orange disc, which can keep a victim afloat, has a nylon rope attached so officers or firefighters can pull in a victim.
Angelino noticed the military used the discs while working with the United States Marine Corps.
Each Norwich police car and several fire department first response vehicles are now equipped with the ResQ Discs.
“The Norwich Fire and Police Departments can expect to respond to people in trouble in the water each summer. During the flooding experience of 2006, a need was realized for a quicker response to a person in trouble in the water,” said Angelino.
Both police and firemen were required to participate in training classes along the banks of the Chenango River. For the last few days, the emergency crews and officers have been familiarizing themselves with the devices and had the opportunity to practice using them.
“We are out here and these conditions are ideal. In a real scenario you have to remember there will be pouring rain, water six feet higher and it’ll be rushing past you at a high speed. Keep that in mind while you’re here today because it could mean all the difference if you’re the first or only one on the scene,” said Assistant Police Chief Van Miles while instructing one of the training sessions Thursday.
“This is one more device that might quickly rescue someone in the water while the more complex rescue gear is being deployed. Most importantly, this should keep a policeman or firefighter from endangering himself in and out of the water,” said Angelino.
