County treasurer reports $13 million in unappropriated surplus

NORWICH – Chenango County’s unappropriated fund balance stands at $13,058,000, Treasurer William E. Evans reported to members of the finance committee last week.

Commitments made through May 31 total $3,209,790. Lawmakers have passed resolutions authorizing $82,000 for renovations at the former jail and sheriff’s office; $1,061,862 for development of a third cell at the Pharsalia Landfill; and $2,065,928 for upgrading the county’s emergency management communications system.

The county had $16,268,301 at the end of 2006, including net revenues of $3,766,606 over expenses. Characterizing the revenues as resulting “from one shot things,” Evans said they represented a $1.3 million reduction in Medicaid expenses and $1.9 million in sales tax, department fees and interest earnings. The remaining $558,000 revenues were spread over all 70 budget units.
