Otselic Valley students go to the dogs
GEORGETOWN – Spots filled the gymnasium of Otselic Valley Elementary School yesterday, as fifth and sixth grade students performed the dress rehearsal of the elementary school musical 101 Dalmatians for the rest of the school.
The kindergarten through fourth grade students waited patiently as the performers worked through the usual snafus associated with a dress rehearsal and enjoyed the expected and unexpected twists in the familiar tale.
Teachers and students have been working on the production for months.
“Mrs. (Winnie) Sortman (school music teacher) has been working on the songs since September,” fifth grade teacher Lori Youngs told the audience, explaining how much hard work had gone into creating the 40 minute production.
The classic children’s tale 101 Dalmatians tells the story of Roger and Anita, (played by Howard Straight and Nikole Olin) an animal loving couple whose puppies are kidnapped by the evil Cruella DeVille (played by Lindsey Bard) and her henchmen Horace and Jasper, (Gavin Lolar and Gavin Plummer). Roger and Anita, with the help of some four legged friends, have to find the puppy before Cruella can turn them into a spotted fur coat.
“All our 61 fifth and sixth graders participate in one way or another,” Youngs later said. Students contribute to the production’s design, work behind the scenes as members of the stage crew, sell tickets and of course act in the production.
The elementary student will perform 101 Dalmatians at 7 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday in the elementary school gymnasium in Georgetown. Tickets to Friday’s show have already sold out.
