Missing elderly woman located by aerial rescue team

NORWICH – Police were called out to find a missing woman suffering from dementia who had wandered from her home Wednesday.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an 80-year-old female with dementia who had walked away from her home on Warner Road in the Town of Norwich. They dispatched their K-9 unit to the area and conducted an immediate cursory search to no avail. The woman had been last seen at around 1 p.m.
The New York State Forest Rangers and the New York State Police helicopter, out of Albany, were called in to assist in searching the densely-wooded areas around the home. With aid from a member of the Norwich Fire Department, the aerial search and rescue unit surveyed the area. The aerial crew located the woman approximately half a mile from her home and guided the Chenango County Search and Rescue Team to the victim.
The elderly woman was treated at the scene for minor abrasions and then returned home.
The Norwich and New Berlin police departments also assisted in the search.
