School draws line between prank, crime
NORWICH – A tradition carried out at the Norwich High School seemed to go over the top Wednesday morning as yards of yarn were draped throughout the building and school furniture littered the halls, delaying the day’s class schedule for roughly 30 minutes.
The culprit or culprits have not yet been identified, but because of the prank, the entire senior class of 2007 lost its privileges on the last regular day of school. Regents exams have begun, and normally on the last day of school seniors get a chance to celebrate the day with a picnic and gathering outside.
High School Principal Thomas Knapp said a prank is a prank, but this one went too far. “The educational process was distrubed for half an hour,” he said.
After discussing the matter with seniors, Knapp said approximately 30 volunteered their time to aid the cleaning effort and to get the building functional again. The gym, being one of the primary target areas, was equipped with tables and chairs lined up and ready for Regents exams.
Knapp said he was unaware of how the student or students gained entry into the building. Last year, the principal said he arrived at school to find two live chickens in the senior courtyard. Referring to what he saw upon arrival yesterday, he said, “I would have preferred chickens.”
Local police officers on the scene say there was no permanent property damage. However, an unrelated incident also occurred Wednesday morning, which caused the Norwich Police Department to get involved. After school opened Wednesday, a sophomore entered the building and sprayed the halls and floors with vegetable oil. Students fell as a result. “It was like ice,” Knapp said.
The student was taken out of the building by police. “No one was injured, but if someone fell and cracked their head open, there would have been more serious charges pressed,” Assistant Chief Van Miles said.
The Norwich youth, 15, was charged with 2nd degree criminal nuisance ( Class B misdemeanor) for allegedly creating a substantial risk to the school population. He was released and scheduled to appear in court as a youthful offender at a later date.
