Dairy court teaches kids healthy eating habits
NORWICH – Introducing healthy eating habits and waging a battle against childhood obesity are two ways the local YMCA is helping the community stay fit.
After-School Program Director Bonnie Tiffany says inviting demonstrators into the facility gives children a hands-on opportunity to learn about eating right and staying healthy through adulthood.
On hand providing a cooking demonstration Thursday was Chenango County Dairy Princess Ashley Fagan and her court of four ambassadors: Elizabeth Brown, Kaitlyn Stoltman, Katelynn Fagan and Malorey Muzzy.
The troupe travels throughout the county to carry out their mission to provide facts about the dairy industry. The demonstration consisted of making quesadillas with cheese, tomatoes and other healthy foods. A group of YMCA after-school program children from the second and third grade got the chance to participate in the presentation and enjoy a tasty treat.
The children received a recipe of treats to make at home as well as a chart to keep children aware of the food they eat each day. Tiffany says she is always looking for healthy ways to demonstrate good eating habits to children.
