Halfway House bridge project awarded to lowest bidder
NORWICH – County Route 32B, known locally as the Halfway House Bridge because it is the midpoint between the towns of Norwich and Oxford, is finally on the docket to be replaced.
Low bidder Tioga Construction of Herkimer was awarded the work for a pricetag of $2.9 million during a meeting of the Chenango County Board of Supervisors Monday. The bridge spans the Chenango River connecting county Rt. 32 with state Route 12. Adjacent properties on the Rt. 12 side were purchased last month in order to accommodate the new bridge’s more south-westerly entrance.
Town of Norwich Supervisor David C. Law expressed enthusiasm upon the passing of the resolution yesterday, giving a thumbs up.
The bridge replacement project is a continuation of an $8 million infrastructure multi-year overhaul of county Rt. 32, undertaken in conjunction with the New York State Department of Transportation. Phase I upgraded Rt. 32 from the Dan Main Hill Road north to state Route 23, and ended in September 2003. Phase II of the project, completed last year, encompassed three miles of roadway beginning south of the Dan Main Hill Road and ending at the bridge’s intersection.
The project is a federal and state aid fundable project at a rate of 95 percent.
Reconstruction is slated to begin this summer and to be completed in the fall of 2008. Public works department officials say there will be a time next summer when both bridges will be closed and traffic will have to go to Norwich or Oxford to access the other side of the river.
