Architects update committee on plans for old jail
NORWICH -– Architectural design work continues on the estimated $2.3 million West Park Place Office project, formerly known as the Chenango County Jail and Sheriff’s Office.
Members of Ithaca-based John Snyder Architects were on hand at a meeting of the Chenango County Agriculture, Buildings & Grounds Committee Tuesday to describe progress and some cost-saving measures undertaken. The scope of the work includes demolishing the 103-year old cell block in between the two structures and creating two, stand-alone, refurbished office buildings complete with elevators, a courtyard and statuary and parking spaces on the north side.
Significant changes from previous design documents include eliminating a handicapped ramp, keeping an interior staircase intact for use and cutting back on one set of restroom facilities.
“We are finalizing the design documents and drawings and beginning our contract documents,” Snyder said.
The upcoming demolition is scheduled for late August. Town of Coventry Supervisor Janice O’Shea, also a member of the Safety and Rules Committee, said the timing for removing the county’s 911 Emergency Management wiring and equipment, still operating from the old Sheriff’s Office, wouldn’t delay the new project.
Other features include some new masonry and a grayish colored metal siding on the two buildings’ north side with some glass store front walls to showcase their historical interiors.
