NORWICH – Central Diagnostic Imaging in Norwich received new state of the art equipment Monday that will put them on the cutting edge of technology.

Trucks and fork lifts stood outside CDI Monday morning, preparing to off-load the 3,000 pound gantry of a new multi-slice spiral CT scanner. The CT scanner will be used for total body imaging. It uses X-rays to generate cross sectional images of the body.

According to Dr. Lawrence J. Rosenblum of CDI, the new machine has many advantages over the older technology. “The multi-slice scanner allows for rapid acquisition of cross sectional images and also allows you to reconstruct them into three-dimensional images,” Rosenblum explained.

The new machine scans 16 times faster than the older scanner. Rosenblum explained the significance of this advancement, pointing out that individuals have to stay completely still while the scan is being done. The new technology allows the images to be obtained in as little as four seconds, making it easier for patients to hold their breath and remain still for that amount of time.
