Blues Assoc. plans free summer concerts
NORWICH – The Chenango Blues Association says it’s assembled a stellar lineup of national and internationally recognized stars to perform in Norwich this summer for its free, five-week concert series starting July 12 in the West Side Park.
The concerts will kick-off the Chenango Blues Festival August 17&18 at the Chenango County Fairgrounds.
Representing a wide array of styles – New Orleans funk, Brazilian roots music, Louisiana Zydeco, Texas Polka and down home rock and roll – the five bands comprising the series roster aren’t short on sound, originality or notoriety, the Blues Association says. Member Eric Larsen pointed out that tickets to see these acts elsewhere are $50 a piece on average.
“They really are high quality shows,” said Larsen. “I hope people take the opportunity to come see world class music for free.”
The first four shows will run from 7 to 9 p.m. on four consecutive Thursdays starting July 12. The fifth and final show will be Tuesday, August 7, in the entertainment tent at the Chenango County Fair as part of free fair admission night.
The Norwich Elk’s Lodge will be cooking for each of the free concerts.
Here’s how the schedule looks:
• “Papa Grows Funk” 7 p.m. Thursday, July 12.
Making a stop in Norwich on its national tour, “Papa Grows Funk” is a New Orleans-based group that integrates jam band elements into a “primal mix of New Orleans R&B, jazz and blues.” The band has received critical acclaim throughout the Crescent City and is recognized as one of the up-and-coming acts stemming from the New Orleans music scene. “These guys are a lot of fun,” said Larsen.
• “Minas” 7 p.m. Thursday, July 19.
“Minas,” from Brazil, have been sponsored to play in the U.S. through a grant from the Pennsylvania Arts Council. Described simply as playing “exciting South American music” the group’s performance in Norwich will be preceded by samba lessons.
• “Rosie Ledet and the Zydeco Playboys” 7 p.m. Thursday, July 26.
Ledet is a veteran of the Chenango Blues Fest and the preeminent female accordionist in the country.
• “Brave Combo” 7 p.m. Thursday, August 2
This two-time Grammy winning group from Denton, Texas, uses Polka as “the jumping-off point for music that crosses jazz, rock, blues and world music,” said Larsen. “They put on a show.”
• “Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen” 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 7 (at Chenango County Fairgrounds).
This legendary act was formed in 1968 and has been a staple in the rock, country, and blues scene.
NBT Bank is the series sponsor, and individual shows are made possible by Procter and Gamble, Norwich Pennysaver and Evening Sun, Professional Teleconcepts, Senator Tom Libous, and Steve and Linda Palmatier. The Blues Association would also like to acknowledge the support of the Chenango County Council of the Arts and the Chenango Arts Fund.
