Saturday’s skate tournament a success

NORWICH – Fifty to sixty people gathered at the skating facility on Borden Avenue on Saturday afternoon for the second Youth Bureau Skateboarding Tournament.
“We had a pretty good turn out,” said Youth Bureau Director Bob Mason of the roughly 50 people who attended. Mason explained most weren’t there to compete, but several spectators were on hand to watch the seven teenage competitors, ages 13 to 19, show off their best moves.
In the second year of the event, Mason said there were only a few faces he recognized. “There were a few kids there from last year’s tournament, but mostly they were new kids,” Mason said.
The skateboard tournament is different from many other local competitions in that it is organized by the kids. This year, Norwich student Mark Jensen, a skater who participates in the event, was largely responsible for putting it all together.
“The kids do everything,” Mason said. He explained that Jensen, along with his brother and a friend, judge the competition based on their own knowledge of skateboarding. “The Youth Bureau provides the facilities, the refreshments and the prizes,” Mason said, explaining that the kids are responsible for the rest of the aspects of the tournament.
Even though there were fewer area teens participating in the event, Mason said the areas the competitors came from were varied, with some coming from as far as Morris to participate. In addition, while only seven people competed in the event the number of spectators exceeded that of last year.
Skaters competed in three different categories: best trick, intermediate and advanced. Adam Holt took first place and Todd Connelly was second in the best trick category. In the intermediate category, Adam Brazee came in first and Clayton Burr was second, and in the advanced category, Smokey Conlan took first, with Todd Connelly coming in second. Jensen helped Mason to pick out the prizes, which included skateboards, portable ramps, skateboard trucks and special skateboard wrenches.
Mason said for the second year in a row the program was a success and the kids seemed to enjoy the competition. He hopes to continue the tournament again next year.
The Borden Avenue Skating Facility and Skate Park will be open all summer long. The skate park is unattended, so participants skate at their own risk. Protective equipment is required.
