Not just your typical hot dog stand
NORWICH – Every day, those few precious minutes of freedom granted to workers during their lunch break sends many scrambling to the best deals around.
Cooked fresh to order, Hot Diggety Dog caters to a long line of patrons, beginning at their break time of about 11 a.m. to the conclusion of most late lunch hours at around 2 p.m. The local hot dog stand has become so popular that is has a call-in pre-order option available and will deliver “reasonable orders within a reasonable distance, we’ve got to at least pay for the gas,” said owner Barry Katz.
Barry and his wife, Trish created their business from scratch after moving to the area from down state this past September. The couple owned and operated their own restaurant in Long Island called the Bunnery Inn.
“Our slogan is ‘We’re not just dogs.’ We’ve got phillies, hot dogs, hamburgers, wraps and chicken. Thursday’s grilled marinated chicken is one of our biggest hits,” said Barry.
The couple cooks everything fresh to order. “If you order a hamburger then it’ll take a minute. These aren’t frozen or precooked. We make it, right there, fresh,” said Trish.
“I’m retired and don’t want to cook any more,” joked Margie Evans as she patiently waited in line. “I come here all the time. They’ll make just about anything you ask them to and the food is the best around. I’d recommend the fried clams and the Hofmann German hot dogs myself,” said Evans.
The Katzes moved here shortly after visiting the area three years ago. “Just like others, we were driving through the town and fell in love with it. We had also wanted a better environment for our daughter to grow up in. It’s hard to find that downstate and the people here are much more considerate and polite,” said Trish.
Trish worked as a jewelry designer for over 20 years and prior to that tried her hand at being a music teacher. Barry worked for a Daily News bureau 20 years before coming to the area.
